Turkey’s poor treatment of its Christian minority has helped to put it on an important list of the world’s worst violators of religious freedom. In its annual report the US Commission on International Religious Freedom now places it in the same category – “country of particular concern” – as such notorious persecutors as North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The report said that restrictions on non-Muslim communities, such as limiting their right to train clergy and own places of worship, “have led to their decline, and in some cases, their virtual disappearance”. It also referred to the increasing number of attacks on Christians, which have ranged from harassment and vandalism to death threats. Pray that this report will prompt Turkey to grant greater freedom and protection to its Christians.
