France starts ban on full-face veil

Anyone in France wearing the Muslim niqab or burqa in public could now face a fine or lessons in French citizenship following Europe's first-ever ban on full-face veils and other face coverings in public.
The French government has provided guidelines instructing police on how to apply the ban, which prohibit them from asking women to remove their veil in the street. The ban has been criticised by some Muslims. Other Muslim leaders have said they support neither the veil nor the law banning it.
