Fears that university has been infiltrated by Islamic extremists
Country/Region: United Kingdom, Europe
Westminster University has elected a new student union president with links to an Islamist group that advocates the establishment of an Islamic state.
According to a Daily Telegraph report, new president Tarik Mahri has links to the group Hizb ut-Tahrir, a group that the Prime Minister has said should be banned as it "seeks to poison young minds against our country". Although the government has not yet taken action, the group has been banned by the National Union of Students and many student unions across the country. However, this is the first known case of individuals with extremist links being elected to senior positions in the student union.
