Helping suffering Christians in Gaza

Project(s): 65-377

Country/Region: HOLY LAND

Yesterday the king of Saudi Arabia announced that his country would give $1 billion in aid to Gaza. At an economic summit in Kuwait, King Abdullah pledged the sum as part of a fund to be established by Arab nations for the reconstruction of the area following the conflict.

Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, International Director of Barnabas Fund, commented, “We welcome and give thanks for this large donation, and for others made by Muslims to help the Muslim people of Gaza. We encourage Christians to show the same concern for the Christian minority in Gaza, by giving generously to meet their needs at this difficult time.”

Barnabas Fund is grateful for the generosity of so many supporters in giving to our current appeal (see the previous article) on behalf of Christians in Gaza, caught up in the recent conflict. But the need is great.

In partnership with Bible Societies in the region, Barnabas Fund has provided food coupons to 400 Christian families. These can be exchanged at supermarkets and temporary shops and will provide food for each family for a month. At present funding for food is the priority, as costs have risen beyond the reach of most families, and the banks have also imposed a withdrawal limit owing to shortage of funds. But in the medium and longer term the Christians of Gaza will have many other needs, including the provision of medicines, the reconstruction of homes and infrastructure, support for people suffering from post-traumatic shock, and allowances for those seeking work. Barnabas Fund is also working with other Christian partners to send further aid to Christians in Gaza.
