Children and Education
Education is the key to the future. In a context of poverty and illiteracy, education can break this cycle and create a new generation who grow up equipped to support themselves and their families. Even in less extreme contexts, a good education is vital for strengthening any community, especially a community despised by the majority population.
A good education in a Christian environment is regarded as the biggest need in many communities where good public education is either unavailable or hostile to the Christian faith. Yet many Christians are too poor to pay for the basic running costs of church schools, and the churches have few resources to meet the need.
Barnabas Fund is assisting numerous Christian schools and educational support schemes, in India, Pakistan, the Middle East and Africa. Some of the children helped will become church leaders, doctors or nurses, lawyers, teachers, business people. They carry the future of the Christian faith in their country.
Where we are supporting the schools, grants pay for teachers’ salaries, utility bills and materials. Where we are assisting support schemes, these are paying for tuition fees, school uniforms, books and other costs. We are currently assisting over 5,000 children in 23 locations. On average it costs just £18 ($29) per month to support a child in school, and in many cases much less.
