Spain – Police break up jihadist cell plotting beheading in Catalonia
Spanish police broke up a cell known as the Islamic Brotherhood for the Preaching of Jihad, on 8 April in Catalonia. It is thought that the group had been planning to behead a random member of the public and film the act. Prosecutors also believe they were plotting to kidnap the female branch manager of Banco Sabadell, a local Catalan bank, as a way to finance their terrorist activities.
UK – Al-Qaeda cleric Hani al-Sibai allowed to walk free and live in taxpayer-paid £1 million home
Suspected of having radicalised Mohammed Emwazi, (Jihadi John), the al-Qaeda-linked cleric, Hani al-Sibai, has avoided government attempts to deport him for over 15 years. Living in a housing association home valued at £1 million, his rent is thought to be paid by the taxpayer. After al-Sibai congratulated al-Qaeda on its “great victory” in the London terrorist attacks in 2007, conservative MP Greg Hands said, “It is amazing that someone with these views is still being of influence today.”
Canada – Foreign money used to promote jihadist ideologies in religious institutions
Millions of dollars from Gulf states are being poured into Islamic institutions in Canada which promote extremist ideologies and jihad. Normally sent from private institutions or individuals, rather than governments, Canadian authorities confess it is difficult to track the path of these funds.
