Tied up and then hacked to death, the villagers of Rwangoma are the latest victims of a Ugandan Islamist militant group, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which according to World Watch Monitor is trying to uproot Christians from the north-east region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. As many as 50 may have been killed on 13 August in the deadliest attack in nearly two years, taking the total death toll in the Christian-majority region to more than 1,000 since October 2014.
The latest attack attributed to the ADF comes barely a month after at least nine people were killed near the town of Oicha and only three months after more than 30 Christians were murdered by the ADF in another village in the region. There are also reports of ADF militants forcing Christians to convert to Islam.
One believer explained the impact the repeated attacks are having on the local church: “We used to have 350 members in church. After the rebels attacked us, we returned for services the very next Sunday. But there were just ten of us.” Nine churches have closed as a result of the recent violence and hundreds of families have fled their homes and their farmland, leaving many at risk of starvation.
