The Christian approach to #GivingTuesday

1 December 2017

#GivingTuesday is a recent movement that has raised record breaking amounts of money for charities and aid agencies worldwide. Originating in the US in 2012, the day follows the flamboyant, greedy and sometimes violent shopping events known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In direct contrast, Giving Tuesday focuses on the message of giving rather than getting.

While the world congratulates itself on ‘bagging a bargain’, many Christians will have been thinking of which charity to support over the Christmas period, celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ with generosity and not excessive consumerism.

So while #GivingTuesday is not a particularly new concept to the Church it is an opportunity as we enter Advent and prepare for the coming of the Saviour into the world, to celebrate its intent and donate a portion of our ‘Christmas budget’ to those who need it most. And that is not the billion pound retail market.

We hope you will consider helping Barnabas Fund to feed over 100,000 Christian children in Africa - children who will celebrate Christmas with much prayer, praise and joyful singing but without very much food at all.

A gift to Barnabas Fund, with our very low overheads, is a way of ensuring that your money does as much as possible to help those in greatest need.
