Orissa Christians still homeless after radical attacks – will you help them?

12 December 2014

Since the massive 2007 and 2008 anti-Christian attacks in Orissa, India, that left around 60,000 Christians homeless, Barnabas has been rebuilding homes for the families who lost everything. Even in 2011 an estimated 2,000 Christian families were still without a proper permanent home. Since then Barnabas has provided over 1,300 houses for homeless families, but more are needed.

At least 400 villages in Kandhamal District were attacked by Hindu extremists and at least 91 Christians lost their lives; some were brutally murdered at the scene while others later died of their injuries or as a result of living in the jungle. Around 18,000 were wounded.   Countless Christian homes were set on fire. Deepankar remembers that there were 110 Christian families in his village, when it was attacked in August 2008: “I couldn’t even imagine how they burnt everything in 30 minutes.”

Barnabas Fund first provided emergency aid for the victims and then continued to support them in a number of ways as they try to rebuild their shattered lives.  Some homes could be repaired, but others were totally destroyed and had to be re-built. Each new home currently costs around £650 (€820; US$1,000; AUS$1,220; NZ$1,300). This provides a simple, one-room property with a cement floor, a tin roof, and a veranda at the front for cooking.

Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, International Director of Barnabas Fund, says:

The impact of these terrible attacks in 2007-8 is still being felt today.  I am so thankful to the generous donors who have enabled us to provide homes for around 6,500 Christians, homeless since the attacks.  But more are still needed.  Will you help Barnabas as we seek to rebuild homes and lives for our brothers and sisters in India?
