“The food given to me today will help me to see my grandchildren for the next 30 days. For the last 3 months, we have been depending on water and some little greens collected from the wild bushes. I was waiting to die … I can only say Alleluia because the Lord Almighty has done this for me and my family.” Elizabeth, a grandmother of 87, expressed her joy on receiving food from Barnabas after waiting in vain for three months for aid to arrive from other agencies.
The brutal civil war in South Sudan has made life intolerable. The South Sudan government and armed rebel groups have used mutilation, torture and sexual violence as weapons of war, causing the largest refugee crisis in Africa at this time. More than 100,000 South Sudanese Christian refugees have fled to Camp Rhino in northern Uganda this year alone, where Barnabas Fund has already provided food aid to save countless lives.
Life is difficult enough in Camp Rhino, without reliable income and after losing all their possessions fleeing the war, all refugees face a daily struggle to feed their families and stay healthy.
But for the especially vulnerable among them whose voices so often go unheard – the elderly, disabled, blind, deaf and orphaned children looking after younger siblings – there is no special help or attention from food relief agencies.
In August this year, 100 of the most vulnerable South Sudanese Christians at Camp Rhino had been waiting for over three months for a share of food relief from another agency to arrive. Barnabas stepped into this desperate gap to provide them with life-saving staple foods including maize flour, beans, cooking oil, rice and salt. Enough for each of them to survive for another month.
James, a blind Christian from South Sudan, was overwhelmed when he received his Barnabas food parcel, “I was waiting for my day to die because of hunger, thanks to God, I can now live for more days. May the God of mercy bless whoever has come to my rescue!!!”
Can you help us make sure even the least of His people have enough to eat?
