Imagine a widow just 17 years old. “Ola” had only recently married when her husband was killed in the Syrian civil war. She is the youngest of 99 Christian widows in Aleppo whom Barnabas Fund is currently supporting.
The war is all but over, but that will not bring back the men they loved – the men who also provided for them. Most of the widows are young and have children to support. Many of their husbands were singled out and killed because of their Christian faith.
Through a church-run programme called “Women with Living Hope”, the widows receive food, clothes for themselves and their children, basic hygiene items, school stationery for their children, and help with medical needs. Fourteen have completed a training course in sewing and tailoring, giving them a new skill with which to earn money. Many have found emotional healing and hope in group counselling sessions, also funded by Barnabas.
Every month the widows meet to enjoy fellowship together. They hear a Biblical message or medical teaching on a subject relevant for them. They celebrate Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day, finding something to be happy about in the midst of their grief.
The Bible tells us: “Look after orphans and widows in their distress.” (James 1:27)
We must not forget the Christian widows of Aleppo and their fatherless children. Their bereavement and loss will last for the rest of their earthly lives.
Just $66 will help one widow for one month.
